ENGLAND WIN 6 GOLD MEDALS AND END TOP NATION AT THE WORLD HIP HOP CHAMPIONSHIPS:  At the IDO World HipHop Championships held in Kalisz Poland at the end of September the results confirmed England had truly arrived in the International Hip hop scene. With over 3000 dancers and national teams from 43 countries worldwide the England team which had only 40 competitors were the top gold medal winners, winning 6 golds. Even though England had won gold medals at previous World Championships with winners including Flawless and Unity the largest haul prior to this year was one gold medal at each World Championships.

Marc Cameron of Milton Keynes had a wonderful week winning 3 gold medals including solo and pairs events but his crew Omen put the icing on the cake by winning the Adult Streetdance small groups event. Over the past years England has had finalists in this event and Omen proved that through Marc’s clever choreography and ideas it was possible for an England group to win this event. Levon Da Silva from Kelly Chandler’s in Oxford was the winner of the Junior Electric Boogie (Popping event) and added the title to his two previous European Championships an outstanding achievement. Steff Massey’s Micky Riddington Smith & Edward Jones won the pairs event. Our 6th gold medallist was young Benjamin Hukin also from Steff Massey’s who having entered his first international event, won the under 12 boys solo event.  Marc Cameron’s partner in winning the duos event was Dumisani Luhana.  Mark and Dumisani were joined by Tyrone Williams, Jamie Mitchell and Pritesh Patel in the winning group Omen.

The IDO World Championships are the Only Official Recognised World Streetdance Championships and like all other IDO events dancers can only be selected to represent their country through their national teams. IDO England are the governing body of all the dance styles run throughout England. SDI are the Streetdance, Electric Boogie, & Breakdance representatives. Next year the European Hiphop Championships are being held in Amsterdam between 10-13 June and the selection for the England team will be on 30th and 31st January at Oxford. The World Championships will be held in Bochum, Germany,  Sep 29, 2010 - Oct 3, 2010 and the selection will be held on the weekend 8th and 9th May at the K2, Crawley.

All the selections are run by the SDI under SDI rules except the England team selections which are run under IDO rules. All SDI events are open to all dancers and schools and there is no registration fee. Ticket prices are kept to a minimum and a major part of SDI profits are given back to the dancers in sponsorships for attending the 2 major International Championships. By Derek Povey - President

MOVE IT 2009 was another success for SDI. Our workshops proved extremely popular and completely sold out! On the Maowam Freestyle Stage Levon Desilva from Kelly Chandlers won the event on the Friday and "Remix" from Kirsten Wheelers came 1st on the Saturday. SDI are very proud of you – well done! Also on the Saturday the Main Stage hosted "Unity", Levon and "Sizzle" from Kelly Chandlers school. They performed a show case on behalf of Street Dance International.

Congratulations to everybody who went to Germany for the 2008 World Hip Hop Championship. Another great year for SDI dancers including an outstanding performance from “Unity” who placed 1st in the adult formation section!

All the teachers and dancers trained very hard to get to these amazing events - we appreciate the hard work put in by all, SDI thanks you all for your commitment.

HISTORY

STREETDANCE INTERNATIONAL (SDI) is the official governing body of HipHop/Streetdance in the UK being affiliated to the British Dance Council (BDC) who are the members of the International Dance Organisation (IDO) who are linked to the Olympic Federation through the International Dance Sports Federation. We are a democratic Organisation of professional teachers and dancers who teach or have an interest in street dance. Any qualified teacher of streetdance or hiphop throughout the UK and the rest of the World may become a member.

Although conceived some years before, the SDI (Streetdance International) was finally set up at the end of 1997 by founder members Jane Hollis & Derek Povey and now, with NEAR ON 300 members, the SDI celebrated it's 10th anniversary in 2007. Since 1996 when the first street dance event was held, the Street Dance style has continued to grow and in 2008 there were some 40 SDI events held throughout the UK. Our annual UK CHAMPIONSHIPS are always a highlight and they offer dancers to opportunity to qualify to represent England in the WORLD Championships! In 2007, the SDI sponsored the England team with £10,000 sponsorship and will again in 2008 & 2009 send the best dancers from England to go to the World Championships, with over 3500 championship dancers and over 7000 spectators everyday over 5 days, is not only the largest hiphop/streetdance event in the World but the largest dance event in the World!

With the amazing talents in Street dance and its ever growing popularity, we can not wait to see what the future holds for SDI!

If you are a professional dancer or teacher, interested in joining the SDI (the United Kingdom's ONLY democratic Streetdance/HipHop association) a membership form can be downloaded from the 'links' section.
