HER MAJESTIES THEATRE
SUN 30TH MAY 2010
It was with a mixture of nerves and excitement that ten dance schools from all over the country descended on Her Majesties Theatre, London on the May Bank Holiday Sunday for the performance of their lives. The routines were ready, costumes sorted, hair and make-up perfect, all that was needed was a chance to rehearse on that famous stage currently used by PHANTOM OF THE OPERA for the last 25 years! After a very thorough health and safety chat, each school got to do just that, each one putting in as much energy as if it was their main performance. All too quickly the run-throughs were over and it was time for the actual show!!
Comparing was DAVID AUSTEN, well known in the musical theatre world; he also treated us to a couple of amazing vocal performances. Other special guests were 4 SCENCE(Group) and KOFI MINGO (B-BOY), all fantastic street performers, JOHN FARNWORTH, whose football skills to street music are matched by no other , he received a big cheer from all the dads in the crowd. Also regular favourites we were pleased to see were KATIE WILLIAMS whose strong voice Im sure we will be hearing a lot more of, and PERIDOT, U.K street dance champs, who the dance schools and audience were most excited to see as they had just appeared on BRITAINS GOT TALENT the previous evening. All the special guests were inspiring.
Most importantly, the schools of STREET DANCE INTERNATIONAL got their chance to shine. Coming from North London, Suffolk, Kent, Essex, Southampton, Portsmouth, and South Wales , each school performed with effort and energy that rivalled the professional acts!
HAYLEY-LOUS opened the show with a breathtaking performance,
BELINDAS DANCE ACACADEMY team X-plicit had some fresh choreography, J.KS dancers had original style, VICKYS SCHOOL OF DANCE blasted their routines looking very effective in orange and black (loved the flowers!), DANCE REVOLUTIONS style and music impressed the audience- AND ALL THIS JUST IN THE 1ST HALF!!
2ND HALF was opened by CLASS, whose original use of music and cheeky moves left the audience clapping and cheering for more!,
ALISON ANDERSONS SCHOOL OF DANCE had some of the youngest (and cutest) performers on the stage-most having never danced in a theatre before! CONTAGIOUS DANCE, a huge group with great facials and bundles of enthusiasm, SOUTHZONES teams Synergy and Cohesion were perfectly in time and unbeknown to the audience were also fabulous in assisting back stage, ALISONS STREET DANCE closed the show with a breathtaking display in which you could see real team spirit and energy.
*Personally one of the nicest parts for me as a backstage helper was watching all the dance schools bond with each other to make new friends, wish each other good luck and complimenting each other. No sense of envy or rivalry, just a big street dance family doing what they do best!!
** Special thanks goes to JANE HOLLIS, chairperson of S.D I and the amazing CLARE MILES for their months of hard work making this show happen!!
